Thank you for your interest in our Annual Season Auditions. We will be holding initial auditions on 9/7 from 12pm to 4 pm at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center at Harrisburg Area Community College. - sign up slot

1 HACC DRIVE Harrisburg PA 17110. Each actor will be seen in 10 minute blocks.

 

Please prepare a 32 bar cut ( About 1 minute if not an exact 32) of a song that shows your range and storytelling ability. We also ask that you prepare a 1-2 minute contemporary monologue. Material from any of the shows is acceptable. Actors only interested in the plays just need to prepare a monologue. Callbacks will be on 9/13 from 12-5. If called back please plan to spend that entire block of time with us ( Food and beverage will be provided) 

 

In reference to the character descriptions - most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with the he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. But, however limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. As an ADA compliant theatre, we welcome performers of all abilities and will make all reasonable accommodations to cast performers, regardless of different abilities in any role possible.

O.T.  CHARACTER BREAKDWON

Stage Manager – age and gender open. Must be a good story teller, able to command the stage and engage the audience. Loves people, easy going and grounded with a clear wisdom. This character is the all-knowing narrator who may be speaking for the author. The Stage Manger literally sets the stage, describes the action and introduces the actors. Steps in and out of the action as other characters: a minister, a drug store owner, a neighbor lady passing by.

​

 Emily Webb – female. Goes from age 16 to 20. In 1901 the age 16 was more sincere and innocent than today. The love story with her and George is the spine of the action of the play. She has the strongest love of life and enthusiasm. Emily’s appears in Act 3 after her death, and she desires to relive everything that was so wonderful, but finally comes to a bittersweet wisdom about the fleeting and ephemeral state of living.

 Mr. Charles Webb – male age between 30 and 55 or so. He is highly educated and is the editor and owner of the only local newspaper. Has a strong connection with his daughter

​

. Mrs. Myrtle Webb – female age between 30 and 55 or so. Wally Webb – young boy age 11 to 13.

​

 George Gibbs – male. Goes from age 16 to 20, (and is 32 in the final act appearance). It is a 16 of 1901 which is a sincere and naïve age. He is an idealist and a romantic. The love story with him and Emily is the spine of the action of the play. He strongly and sincerely desires to be the best person he can be for the love of his life. 

​

Dr. Frank Gibbs – male age between 30 and 55 or so. He is a doctor and family man. Romantic and in love with his wife.

​

 Mrs. Julia Gibbs – female age between 30 and 55 or so. Mother of George & Rebecca. Strong love for her family. A romantic who dreams of visiting Paris. Strong connection with her son. 

​

Rebecca Gibbs – young girl age 11 to 13. Has a strong sense of energy and wonder about the world. Amazed at the stars and the earth’s place in the galaxy. Has a strong & important short speech about this at the end of Act 1.

​

 Joe Crowell – male (or female) age 14 or so. Delivers the newspapers and sets up important sense of friendliness among the neighbors of the small town. Actor will also play one or two ensemble roles.

​

 Howie Newsome – male (or female) age 14 or so. Delivers the milk, leading the horse and wagon. Sets up important sense of friendliness among the neighbors of the small town. Actor will also play one or two ensemble roles. 

​

Simon Stimson – adult (usually male, open to female casting) unspecified age. Leader of the church choir, but has deep problems and a clear drinking problem. Attitude is acerbic, he/she is possibly depressed. Stimson’s drinking is the town’s scandalous gossip. 

​

Constable Warren – adult male, age unspecified. Actor will also play one or two ensemble roles. Mrs. Soames – adult female, age unspecified. Sings in the choir and loves to spread gossip. 

 

A STREET CAR NAMED DESIRE/ CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Blanche DuBois: A sensitive, delicate, moth-like member of the fading Southern aristocracy, about thirty years old, she has just lost her teaching position in Laurel, Mississippi, because of her promiscuity. She, therefore, left Mississippi and as the play opens arrives at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Stella and Stanley Kowalski.

​

Stella Kowalski: Blanche’s younger sister, about twenty-five years old, she is married to Stanley and lives in the French Quarter of New Orleans. As the play opens we learn that she is pregnant with their first child. She is happy in her marriage and her home; however, much to the consternation of Blanche, she has forgotten her genteel upbringing in order to enjoy a more common existence.

​

Stanley Kowalski: A rather common working man, about twenty-eight to thirty years old, his main drive in life is sexual. He is a former master sergeant in the engineer corps and faces everything and everybody in his life with a brutal realism.

​

Harold Mitchell (Mitch):Stanley’s friend who went through the war with him, he is unmarried and has a dying mother for whom he feels a great devotion. He is one of a group of men who gather regularly at the Kowalski home for poker. He, however, is a bit gentler than the others and even plans to marry Blanche until he learns of her unsavory past.

​

Steve Hubell: A neighbor of the Kowalskis, he is one of the men who gather to play poker.

​

Eunice Hubell:The wife of Steve, she is a good friend to Stella.

 

Pablo: Another of Stanley’s poker-playing buddies.

 

A Doctor: An employee at the state mental institution, he comes to commit Blanche and is able to comfort her.

A Nurse:An assistant to the doctor.

​

A Young Man:A subscription collector for the newspaper.

MARK LEE FULLER-20's, the sissy who thinks too much and dreams of a perfect world.

TJ. BROOKS-20's, the masculine sissy, who believes and clings tightly to God's Holy Word.

​

ANDREW THOMAS FORD-20's, the conflicted sissy who can't pray away the feelings.

​

BENNY/IONA TRAYLOR-20's, the effeminate sissy who has escaped in a world of drag.

​

MOTHERS-Mark's is sweet and saccharine; Benny's is beyond trailer trash; Andrew's is older, worried and kind. All three mothers are played by the same actress.

​

 PREACHER-40-60. He preaches what he believes-hell, fire and brimstone

.

RESTON "PEANUT" LEROY-the 55-year-old tragically funny alcoholic queen.

​

BROTHER CHAFFEY/HOUSTON-Brother Chaffey is the latent church pianist, Houston the gay bar pianist. Both are the same actor/musician.

​

ODETTE ANNETTE BARNET-40's-50's, a loudmouth bar fly who has a sad secret. 

​

STRIPPER-The club go-go boy who has a ripped, beautiful body. (Author's suggestion is to double cast with the actor who plays T.1.)

6 PRINCIPALS / 12 FEATURED

NARRATOR – An actress with a strong rock singing voice (high belt to E, full-range Mezzo) who is strong on comedy and moves well. Tenor vocalist if played by a male performer.


JOSEPH – Tenor. The eleventh son of Jacob. His father’s favorite, Joseph early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. This gets him into trouble with his brothers when he predicts his future will include ruling over the other eleven. However, it saves his life when in Egypt he correctly interprets Pharaoh’s dreams. In the end, he has risen to a great position of power, but he still forgives his brothers and brings his family to Egypt to partake of the bounty he has accumulated there.


JACOB – Joseph’s father. An actor in his 50s/60s with a baritone voice.


JOSEPH’S BROTHERS – Eleven brothers with strong singing voices, the ability to dance, and contrasting body types and ethnicities. Requires featured solo brothers for Country and Western style in “One More Angel in Heaven,” Jacques Brel/Maurice Chevalier style for “Canaan Days,” two brothers to double the BUTLER and BAKER, and a strong dancer with partnering ability (Adagio) in “The Apache.”

 The exact vocal ranges are not available at this time so we strongly encourage you to listen to the original Broadway Cast recording for a general idea. Also note that this script is a revised version vastly different than the Broadway. It offers the ensemble a much larger body of work and feature solos.

With the exception of the actor who plays Alice, all principal actors in the play have two roles—One in present day New York City, and the second in Wonderland.
